If somebody else caused the damage to your vehicle, being without it is part of the loss you have suffered. A replacement vehicle exists to deal with that.

What like-for-like means

It means a vehicle comparable to your own, rather than whatever happens to be available. If you drive an estate, you should not be handed a city car. If you drive a van with racking in it, a car is no use to you at all.

Where you are entitled to a replacement vehicle, we will arrange one matched as closely as we can to the vehicle you have been deprived of, for the period yours is off the road.

How it differs from a courtesy car

A courtesy car is something we may be able to lend you, subject to availability, while we carry out insurance or private work. It keeps you mobile and it may well be smaller than your own car.

A like-for-like replacement vehicle relates to a non-fault claim and is about matching what you have lost the use of. Different route, different basis.

Tell us what the vehicle does

This is the part that makes the difference between a replacement that works and one that does not.

Tell us at the first call whether you carry tools, whether there are child seats to move across, whether you tow, whether you need a particular size for where you park, or whether the vehicle is doing a specific job. It is far easier to get the right vehicle from the start than to change it a few days in.

How long you keep it

You keep the like-for-like vehicle for the period your own vehicle is genuinely off the road being repaired. We will keep you updated on the repair, so you know where you stand, and we will tell you in good time when your vehicle is coming back.

Getting it sorted

Raise it at the very first conversation rather than later. Arranging the right vehicle takes a little organising, and the earlier we know, the better the match.
